This is the November 6, 2010 development build of Opera 11, re-packaged for Puppy Linux by yours truly from
http://snapshot.opera.com/unix/20658_11.00-1055/
opera-11.00-1055.i386.linux.tar.bz2

Tested by self in Wary and Quirky using nVidia and ATi Radeon video cards, but it has been reported that Flash does not work under Wary using an Intel video chipset.

Screen capture, showing Opera 11 in front of Opera 10.63.

New in Opera 11: Opera now supports extensions, like Firefox does. I have added NoAds (AdBlock plus NoScript) and the one-click configurator. The new buttons for these are at upper right in Opera 11. More extensions can be found at
https://addons.labs.opera.com/addons/extensions/

Release notes are at http://my.opera.com/desktopteam/blog/ today, though this will scroll away fast. Official disclaimer: "WARNING This is a development snapshot: It contains the latest changes, but may also have severe known issues, including crashes and data loss situations..." et cetera. The 1045 build had problems, but this 1055 build seems relatively problem-free.

I like Opera because it saves webpages by default in single-file .mht format, and because sometimes Opera Turbo helps with my slow connection (but sometimes Turbo Off is faster, depends on the website).

This package is an add-on .sfs file for current versions of Puppy Linux (Lucid Puppy 5.nn and the luci series and Quirky 1.n and Wary-09n-or-5) frugal installs which have already been shut down once and have had the savefile created. Thus, I'm giving you the chance to try Opera 11 without disturbing your present installations of other browsers and without having to first create a backup of your savefile. Well, you should back up your savefile before trying *anything* new, but you know what I mean.

It installs Opera using the suffix -11.00-1055.i386 so it is completely separate from, and will not interfere with, any existing Opera (or other browser) installation. Uninstalling this .sfs, that is, telling Boot Manager to remove it from the active (right-side) pane and rebooting, will leave your present Opera (and all other browsers) intact as they were before. You may wish to, before removing the .sfs from Boot Manager, run the uninstall program which is
/usr/local/bin/uninstall-opera-11.00-1055.i386
to clear out the cache in /root/ and so forth from your savefile.

I have also added Adobe Flash Player "Square" (32-bit) version 10.1 beta, it is
/usr/local/lib/opera-11.00-1055.i386/plugins/libflashplayer.so
. I have changed the first-searched plugins directory from its default location of /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins to
/usr/local/lib/opera-11.00-1055.i386/plugins
, so installing or uninstalling this package will not affect your present Flash player in other browsers.

TO INSTALL: download:
http://myfreefilehosting.com/f/f84cdb3708_16.7MB
(You may have to scroll down to see the download button)

opera-11.00-1045.i386-SHS.sfs (17,465,344 bytes)
md5sum:
# md5sum opera-11.00-1055.i386-SHS.sfs
cafdb71a542c7de952399c650fa5d285 opera-11.00-1055.i386-SHS.sfs

into either /mnt/home or into the subdirectory where you have Puppy, then
left-click Menu ->
System ->
Boot Manager configure startup ->
Choose which extra SFS files to load at bootup,
select (click to highlight) it in the left pane,
Add it to the right pane,
close out Boot Manager,
and reboot.

Opera will now be in your menu under Internet. Widgets Manager is under Setup. Home page is the official Opera extensions page.

Technical notes:

(note: the problem I was having previously with smooth scrolling, turned out to be a defective mouse!)

I moved the menu files (Opera-11.00-1055.i386.desktop et cetera) from
/usr/local/share/applications up to /usr/share/applications, so they are grouped with all the other common menu .desktop files.

I added one script in /root/Startup, Clean_Up_Opera_11.00-1055.i386_and_gFTP_and_KDE_wh_files, to prevent the savefile from growing too large. For explanation see http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=29707. I am not sure if performing these cleanups at the start of X, by placing the script in /root/Startup, is a good idea or not. Advice is welcome.

I have not implemented any of the safeguards against evercookies, presently being discussed at
http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?t=60935.

Thanks for the links!

I have a problem with a horrible, small font appearing in this browser, similar to the nasty font we used to get with Firefox in Puppy.

This same problem does *not* occur with my normal version of Opera, downloaded as a pet file.
Any advice on dealing with it? I played around with the appearance options but it doesn't help much.

Well, you can increase the minimum font size by doing
ctrl-F12 -> Advanced -> Fonts
and set minimum font size to 12.

Thanks for this SHS... giving it a try. Traditionally I have liked Opera but had problems with some sites with Flash. Hopefully this one will be better. To be fair, Seamonkey can be problematic with some Flash stuff too....
